1. Security cameras can be a great deterrent against criminals vandalizing and breaking in to your home.

A lot of times just the idea of being watched or under surveillance can deter people from committing a crime or doing something that they’re not supposed to do. So, having security cameras recording the major entry points of your home can be enough to stop a would-be burglar from targeting your home.

I personally have three cameras in the front area of my home covering the front yard, driveway and front door so it would be very hard to walk on to my property or navigate your way into the rear of the property without being detected and recorded.

I even took things a step further and installed sensors on my side yard gates so whenever someone opens my gates, I will receive a text message. I can then check my security cameras on my phone to see who is entering my backyard.

This feature alone was extremely helpful when my kids were younger, they were able to play in the backyard without being supervised every minute and I would be alerted as soon as they tried to open the gates and go into the driveway.

2. Document evidence for insurance.

In a lot of situations small incidents or theft are not investigated do to lack of evidence but having video footage can be enough or help catch a perpetrator or help your case in an insurance claim.

3. Monitor what goes on in and around your home.

If you’re a parent, then you know some of the reasons why we just want to know what’s going on in and around our home while we’re away. Sometimes we just want to know what our kids are up to especially if they’re teenagers. Or you just want to monitor for suspicious activity well before a crime is even committed. Either way knowing what’s going on can give you peace of mind, especially if you out of town.

If you’re interested in installing security cameras for your home, there a few things to consider.

What video recording quality do you need?

Video resolution is measured in pixels, the more pixels the camera uses to record video the sharper the video image.

Video camera resolution ranges anywhere from 1.3 megapixels to 12 megapixels but in most situations 5-megapixel cameras are more than adequate for most homes especially if you’re covering a small area where the camera is only a few feet from the action, in these cases even a 2-megapixel camera is enough to get detailed images.

How many cameras do I need to install around my home to get good coverage?

Some homeowners are ok with just one camera covering their front door area or their driveway but the average number of cameras that we install for most homes can range between 4-16 cameras depending on the size of your home. I personally started with five cameras covering the front and back of my house but added seven more to get better coverage on the sides of the property and a few inside.

How much video storage do you need?

There are a few methods of recording video from your security cameras.

1. Record to the cloud. A good example of this is the Ring or Nest video doorbells an cameras, but in most cases there will be a monthly fee of around $3.00 to $5.00 per camera, so if you have four cameras installed you can end up paying $144 to $240 a year just for recording fees. This can end up costing you a lot and since you plan on using your security cameras for many years, you might want record onto a digital video recorder installed in your home.

 

2. Record locally on a digital video recorder. Installing a digital video recorder is the most common way to record security cameras because there are no monthly fees involved. Depending on the size of your recorder’s hard drive you can store two to eight weeks of video and sometime more if needed, but two to four weeks of recording is usually satisfactory for most homeowners.

 

3. Record on a SD card. Some cameras have built in slot to insert a SD memory card, but the recording time is limited to only a few days.

 

Can you see video from your phone?

Pretty much every security camera system these days can be viewed remotely from your smartphone as long as you have an internet connection at your home.

 

Is there a monthly fee after you purchase your security cameras?

There are no fees for viewing your cameras on your smartphone, but some security companies might try to charge for this feature. The phone app from the camera manufacturer is free so be weary of any installation company that wants to charge you for this feature.

 

What about night vision?

Not all night vision is created equal. One of the main features to look for when purchasing security cameras is the quality of its night vision, and this all depends on the existing lighting around your home. Cameras have a built-in infrared flashlight that is invisible to the human eye but light up the image at night. The strength of this light varies with each camera, so we need to match the cameras night vision capability with the size of the area being recorded. Typically, a camera’s night vision range is between 65 to 130 feet but there are long range cameras available up to 350 feet.

 

Do you want audio too?

Some cameras have a microphone to record audio. Others also have speakers so you can speak into your phone and speak to someone like an intercom. This comes in handy if you have indoor cameras and you want to make sure your kids are not misbehaving or if the kids are with the nanny while you’re at work.

 

What’s better wired or wireless cameras?

For indoor cameras it’s much easier to install wireless cameras, they can just be placed on the counter and plugged into the electrical outlet for power. For outdoor cameras I would only recommend installing wired cameras for two reasons, wireless cameras are usually not as good as wired cameras when it comes to video quality and night vision and even though they are called wireless cameras most of them need to be plugged into an electrical outlet for power, so some wiring is still necessary.

 

Security cameras are a great addition to any home. They can make criminals think twice before they break in or vandalize your property.  And really, they’ll help you have peace of mind, knowing that if something is going on around your home, you’ll know about it. And that’s worth a lot by itself.
